Administer data imports

Keep data entering the platform on a governed path so imports become controlled records, and use the import history as provenance an auditor can rely on.

Where the Import & export section covers how a person runs an import, this is the administrative view: the sources the platform can ingest and the record of what’s been brought in. The goal is simple — data entering the platform should become controlled records subject to the same governance as anything authored natively, and that path should be overseen and recorded. For the reference, see Data import.

Keep imports on the governed path

The value of a central import area is that data arrives through one governed route rather than ad-hoc side channels.

Before you start Open Administration and go to Data import. You'll need administrator access.

  1. Review the sources the platform can ingest — spreadsheets, documents, requirements interchange files, and SBOMs.
  2. Ensure data comes in through this governed path, so imported data lands as controlled records rather than arriving through side channels.

Result Data entering the platform is held to the same governance as records authored natively. See Import & export.

Use import history for provenance

A kept history turns an import from an invisible event into a traceable one.

  1. Review the import history to see what was brought in, from what source, and when.
  2. When records originate from an import, point to that import — its source and its timing — as the provenance an auditor may ask about.

Result Imported records carry a traceable origin, not an unexplained one.

Note The throughline is that imported data is governed exactly like native data, and this admin view is what makes that path overseen and recorded. The mechanics of mapping fields and previewing an import before it commits live on the user side, in Requirements import and ReqIF & field mapping.

Where to go next

To see how a person actually runs an import — choosing a source, mapping fields, and previewing before commit — see Import & export, with the specifics in Requirements import and ReqIF & field mapping.
